A new approach for analysing drop contour experiments was developed within this work, which is published as “high-precision drop shape analysis (HPDSA)”. The HPDSA can be divided into two parts. The first part represents the software, which is able to calculate contact angle data from sessile drop measurements, independent on drop symmetry. The unique benefit of the software is that every step is totally controllable and adjustable by the user. The second part represents three newly developed analyses strategies for contact angle measurements. The first approach is based on the fitting of a modified sigmoid function onto the experimental course of the contact angles. This approach is effective to describe the dynamically evolution of the contact angle data and to analyse pinning effects on surfaces. The second and third approaches are based on a statistical algorithm to count so called contact angle events. These approaches are very suitable to correlate the motion behaviour of liquids with local surface properties. In summary, these approaches lead to robust and reproducible contact angle data and greatly enhance the quality of information, which can be extracted from wetting experiments.A new approach for analysing drop contour experiments was developed within this work, which is published as “high-precision drop shape analysis (HPDSA)”.
