The thesis at hand studies the non-equilibrium dynamics of the one-dimensional transverse-field XY model as well as of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice after quenches of one or more parameters of their Hamiltonians. The one-dimensional system is integrable and its Hamiltonian can be diagonalized by a transformation to a system of free fermions. In contrast to this the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model is nonintegrable and cannot be solved analytically. For the one-dimensional transverse-field XY model the time evolution of different observables like magnetization, correlation functions and entanglement entropy is computed with free fermion techniques and compared to the results of a semiclassical theory for the relaxation process. Moreover it is shown that the stationary states of the system can be described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. The time evolution of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model is determined with a variational Monte Carlo method and the system is tested for thermalization after different quench protocols, i.e. the question is answered whether its stationary state can be described by the canonical Gibbs ensemble. Furthermore using time-dependent mean field theory based on the BBGKY hierarchy the spreading of an initially local perturbation is studied. |
