The thesis deals with the the effects of information technology in organizations with a particular emphasis on the role of motivation of the organizational members. Giddens'; Theory of Structuration and its application in the research of information technology in organizations represents the theoretical grounding. A review of prior and related research leads to the development of a new model - the "Model of Motivational Structuration'; - which focuses on the interaction of the user, including the factor of motivation, and the information technology in the context of the organization. The Model of Motivational Structuration describes the implementation, transformation and institutionalization of information technology in organizations as a process reflexively monitored by the individual according to his or her motivational disposition. The organizational structure is the context that constitutes action and that is constituted by action: rules of signification and sanction describe the constitution of sense and normative regulation on which the individual draws and which in turn is modified by the individual in action. Implementing information technology within an organizational structure provides an occasion where new rules for interaction with that technology emerge and existing rules are modified. In the institutionalization the information technology is established as a new allocative resource and a specific trait of the organizational structure. The Model of Motivational Structuration is tested and validated in a qualitative case study of a consulting firm that has implemented a Customer Relationship Management application. |
