Epoxy reactive systems are used as a structural adhesive in civil engineering, automotive engineering, shipbuilding and aircraft construction as well as for encapsulating electrical components. They are utilised as coatings and lacquers against corrosion and as a matrix material for polymer composites. Their chemical base consists of an epoxy resin and a hardener like dicyandiamide as one of the most applied hardeners. But, these epoxy-dicyandiamide reactive systems cure efficiently (low curing temperature, short curing time) only with an accelerator. This accelerator, however, activates processes at room temperature that lead to an increase of viscosity and hence to the loss of process ability. That reduces the shelf life considerably. For prolongating the shelf life, special zeolites shall encapsulate an accelerator in their pores. According to thermal gravimetric analysis, the zeolites release this accelerator when the temperature increases. In this thesis, it is proven that the zeolites loaded with an accelerator give an epoxy-dicyandiamide reactive system a shelf life of more than 220 days at room temperature. Moreover, this zeolite-modified epoxy cures efficiently at 170 °C (curing time: less than 30 min). Considering the interaction of epoxy resin, dicyandiamide, accelerator and the zeolite surface, the processes that lead to an increase of viscosity, the structure formation during the curing at 170 °C and the caloric and dielectric properties are explained. |
