Dimensionally stable anodes (DSA) for the chlorine evolution are usually prepared by thermal decomposition of metal precursor solutions. Since their microstructures, phase compositions and surface morphologies are inhomogeneous, the electrocatalytic activities of these coatings are strongly dependent on the preparation conditions. In the present work an alternative electrochemical synthesis for the preparation of DSA-electrodes for the chlorine evolution based on the standard system TiO2-RuO2 has been developed successfully. Electrochemical properties of these coatings were analyzed using a combinatorial multi cell setup which has also been developed in this work. The electrochemical coatings exhibit an extraordinary surface morphology which provides a high active surface area and improves the catalyst utilization comparing to conventional coatings. Furthermore, the formation of inactive TiO2 anatase phases is suppressed at low noble metal contents. Hence, electrochemical coatings enable to achieve a similar or higher electrocatalytic activity at reduced noble metal content. With the introduction of further components into the binary system a further reduction of the noble metal content could be achieved. |
