In atomic force acoustic microscopy the contact resonances of the cantilever are used to characterize elastic properties of materials with a lateral resolution of about 10 nm. The resonance spectra of the cantilever often exhibit spurious signals that complicate analyzing these spectra. A new method of cantilever excitation is presented that acts directly to the cantilever. This technique is based on the coupling of a depletion layer to the lattice strain. In the resonance spectra spurious signals disappear almost completely. The coupling mechanisms like Maxwell stress, electrostriction, thermal effects and deformation potential are discussed and compared to the experimental results. It turns out that Maxwell stress and electrostriction are the dominant effects. Furthermore, a new raster-scan microscopy method is presented, that enables the examination of doping profiles on a semiconductor. This technique is also based on the forces acting between the tip of the cantilever and the doped semiconductor. Furthermore, piezoelectric properties of thin films produced by combinatorial chemistry are examined in an automated way using the so-called ultrasonic piezomode in high-throughput. In addition an atomic force acoustic microscopy technique that is based on the free decay of a forced vibration is advanced. This technique is tested on samples with a wide range of Young';s moduli. |
