Identity is widely regarded in political science as a central prerequisite for the stability of political systems and also occupies a prominent place in research on European integration. Whether and in what ways European identification fosters integration, however, remains contested. This dissertation argues that the political effects of European identification depend less on its intensity than on its substantive meaning. Starting from the observation that existing empirical studies often rely on highly simplified measures of European identity, while theoretical approaches assume considerable concep-tual complexity, this study examines different substantive forms of European identification at the micro level. It asks which meaning dimensions of European identity can be empirically distinguished and how they shape political attitudes and behaviours. This cumulative dissertation and its individual contributions address this central research gap by systematically engaging with conceptual ambiguities in previous research, empirically reconstructing and comparatively measuring different meaning dimensions of European identification. The political consequences of these forms of identification are examined through the so-called “attachment puzzle”. The findings demonstrate that stronger attachment to Europe does not automatically translate into system-supportive attitudes. Instead, different meaning dimensions of European identity produce partly opposing political effects, helping to explain why growing European attachment can coexist with electoral support for Eurosceptic parties. The dissertation thus contributes to a more precise conceptualization of identity in European studies and shows that the political relevance of European identity depends crucially on its substantive structure.
