Abstract: This presentation explores the significance of impact metrics in the context of Open Access. It compares citation-based measures like the Journal Impact Factor and Hirsch Index with usage-based metrics, highlighting their strengths and limitations. The talk addresses the challenges of traditional metrics in evaluating Open Access publications and advocates for the development of alternative, usage-centered impact measures. Emphasis is placed on the role of standardized metrics in enhancing the visibility and evaluation of scholarly works, supported by insights from the Open Access Statistics (OAS) project.
