Abstract: This chapter reviews the effectiveness of the psychostimulants amphetamine, methylphenidate, and modafinil in the treatment of mental disorders. It will provide an overview of the existing randomized, controlled studies that have been carried out with these substances. Although possible side effects must always be considered in relation to efficacy of psychopharmacological treatment of mental disorders, the main focus of this overview is on the evidence of effectiveness of psychostimulants. Wherever possible, the results of metaanalytical investigations of the existing studies are also presented.
