Abstract: The main goal of the research project doing AGENCY is to examine how self determination is negotiated in scientific inquiry. Unlike previous studies, we don’t focus on an individual feeling of self-determination, but rather on so cial mechanisms. Consequently, self-determination is conceived and analyzed as a negotiation between teachers and primary school students and – simul taneously – as a negotiation with the explored phenomenon. The results we present give a first clue on how teachers structure the learners’ self determined experimental processes with gestures, facial expression and body language. In some cases, the verbal and nonverbal parts of the structuring processes contradict each other. Thus, teachers influence their students’ de cision-making processes and the negotiation of self-determination more or less subtly.
