Abstract: Many vertebrates possess at least two distinct olfactory systems—a main olfactory system and an accessory olfactory system—both of which are capable of detecting and transducing molecular cues of a social nature, such as pheromones. This article summarizes the basic physiology and functions of the accessory olfactory system, which includes the vomeronasal organ and the accessory olfactory bulb.
