In nanocrystalline ferromagnets, different types of disorder can have a distinct influence on the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition. This disorder comprises the inter-grain random magnetic anisotropy as well as a distribution of exchange coupling constants that is introduced by the defect cores of the grain boundaries. In this experimental work the rare-earth ferromagnet gadolinium provides a model system to investigate the impact of nanocrystallinity on the critical behaviour at the magnetic phase transition. For this purpose, conventional magnetization measurements and small-angle neutron scattering were used as complementary measurement techniques to obtain information on the macroscopic as well as the microscopic magnetic features. The results are interpreted in terms of a novel universality class for second-order phase transitions in disordered systems which is characterized by mean-field-like asymptotic behaviour. |
