Subject of this thesis is a structural and thermodynamic study of rod-like molecules confined in monolithic porous silicon, a monocrystalline matrix permeated by anisotropic pores with a mean diametre of 10 nm. The main experimental method to characterize the appearing mesophases will be temperature dependent x-ray diffraction measurements. The thesis treats the phase transitions and the texture of selected n-alkanes as a function of their chain length, the pore filling fraction and geometry. Furthermore the crystallization behaviour and the appearing mesophases of ethanol, a typical glass former, are studied, as well as medium length 1-alcohols whose stability is also examined dependent on the pore wall chemistry. The influence of confinement and the pore size both on the orientation of the liquid crystal 8CB and the phase sequence are subject of a supplemental paragraph. |
