The influence of nanocrystallinity on the ferro-to-paramagnetic phase transition was studied experimentally in gadolinium prepared by the inert-gas-condensation method. Measurements of the magnetic AC susceptibility indicate that the Curie temperature Tc is shifted to lower temperatures in the nanocrystalline state. Isothermal annealing of the samples resulted in controlled grain growth, thus permitting the functional dependence of the Tc shift on crystallite size to be determined. The reduction in Tc could be attributed to a 20% weakening of the interatomic magnetic coupling in the grain- boundary core regions. Further insight into the nature of the ferro-to-paramagnetic phase transition in nanocrystalline gadolinium was gleaned from a detailed analysis of critical exponent values extracted from isothermal magnetization curves. The critical behavior was found to depend sensitively on sample geometry through the associated form anisotropy. |
