Abstract: It has been suggested to describe the relationship between words and their morphological derivations not by means of lexical rules but instead by a mechanism of morphosyntatic structure building in recent HPSG-based research. In this paper, both approaches are compared and it is showed that for each lexical rule a weak aquivalent morphosyntactic analysis can be assumed. Looking more closely to an elaborated lexical rule analysis of German passive (Kiss 1993) an alternative morphosyntactic approach is suggested, which in turn is integrated in a syntactically determined theory of case and agreement for German.
