Abstract: A new method is presented, by which the protective properties of external protective glazings at historic stained glass windows can be investigated. Small glass chips, prepared according to the best application of a special IR-characterization of the glass deterioration process, can be used as reliable indicators of the corrosive stress at a specific chosen place. Arranged behind and in front of a double glazing, the protective efficiency of the specific protective measure can be judged directly by comparing the IR-results after a chosen time of exposure, e.g. 6 months. The method can be used with rather low effords and causes nearly no local inconveniences.
