Abstract: -
The discovery of fluoride glasses in 1974 was the beginning of numerous research. These glasses are transparent from the UV to beyond 7 µm in the infrared. We report on the synthesis of fluorozirconate glasses and preforms of compositions ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-LiF (ZBLALi). The first brazilian optical passive infrared fiber was drawn with the following geometric characteristics: length 15m, core and cladding diameter 135 µm and 175 µm respectively. The preliminary physical characteristics are presented: optical attenuation, refractive index profile and numerical aperture. We also discuss near future applications for the use of such fibers.
