Abstract: From the investigation between 57 and 300°K. of the kinetics of the scintillations produced by â-rays and by pulses of 1-Mev. protons, from the uv excitation spectrum and the ir stimulation, it is concluded that the 3450-A. component in pure CsI may be attributed to the recombination of relaxed excitons. A simple model of centers with configuration curves describes the recombination kinetics adequately. Below 100°K., Vk-centers are produced by â-particle excitation in an amt. varying from 1 to 10% of the total irradn. The relations between pair recombination by ir stimulation and by thermal instability of the Vk are discussed in connection with the blue 4300-A. component.
