At various times in the past, the intonation of Bulgarian has been the object of scientific interest. However, there has, as yet, been no description which has attempted to establish the relations between phonological tonal categories, their phonetic exponency and their information-structural function within a modern descriptive framework. A comprehensive model of this type would, of course, exceed the scope of any single monograph. Within an autosegmental-metrical framework, this dissertation investigates a number of phonetic and phonological aspects of the variety of Bulgarian spoken in Sofia. In the theoretical part, the results of earlier studies of Bulgarian intonation are presented and their in part complementary approaches discussed. The empirical studies presented here are based on a set of data which comprises both quasi-spontaneous speech (map-task recordings) and strictly controlled read material. An inventory of nuclear tone accents is derived from the combined analysis of both corpora and defined with respect to the various communicative functions which are investigated. From this, a formal framework for the phonology of Bulgarian utterance intonation is constructed. A series of experiments demonstrates the complexity of intonational phonetic exponency; in inter-individual and positional variation of any given phonological-functional category, in the choice of a tonal or atonal form of demarcation, in the frequently noted but just as frequently ignored non-linearity in the relationship between intonation and sentence modality, i.e., the dependency of the signaled modality on the particular communicative situation.
