This study deals with clefting and its functions in Brazilian and European Portuguese. This linguistic means allows the sender to convey his or her message in a particularly effective way and to express many different meaning nuances. The wide variety of clefting forms in Portuguese is connected to a complex variety of functions, which are analysed in detail in a corpus of 20th century novels and contrasted with a German reference corpus. An analysis of the translations shows the relevance of the cleft functions in the translation process. As German does not have the same structural cleft variety due to its relatively free word order, the analysis is based on the tertium comparationis of the cleft function. Finally, some possible translation methods based on these functions are presented. |
