Empathie und die Big Five

Abstract

Del Barrio et al. (2004) haben vor mehr als 10 Jahren versucht, eine direkte Beziehung zwischen Empathie und den Big Five herzustellen. Im Mittel hatten in ihrer Stichprobe Frauen höhere Werte in der Empathie und auf den Big Five-Faktoren mit Ausnahme des Faktors Neurotizismus. Zusammenhänge zu Empathie fanden sie in den Bereichen Offenheit, Verträglichkeit, Gewissenhaftigkeit und Extraversion. In unseren Daten besitzen Frauen sowohl in der Empathie als auch den Big Five signifikant höhere Werte, wenn auch die Effektstärken für Extraversion und Verträglichkeit eher niedrig sind. Die stärkste Korrelation findet sich zwischen Empathie und Verträglichkeit. Somit können unsere Daten die These bestätigen, dass Empathie ein starkes Element für die Qualität interpersonalen Verhaltens darstellt. Kritisch zu sehen ist dabei die BFI-10-Skala, deren Testkennwerte nicht repliziert werden konnten.

Del Barrio et Al. (2004) have tried more than 10 years ago to show the correlation between empathy and the Big Five. In her study, women scored higher in empathy and the Big Five factors with the exception of neuroticism. Correlations to empathy were found in openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness and extraversion. In our sample women had significantly higher values in empathy as well as the Big Five, although the effect sizes are rather low for extraversion and agreeableness. The strongest correlation is found between empathy and agreeableness. Therefore our data can confirm the thesis that empathy is a strong element for the quality of interpersonal behaviour. Critical to be seen is the BFI-10 scale itself while reliability and validity scores could not be replicated.
