Abstract: Process sequences and pattern formation. An anthropogeographical approach, the city-umland-system as a paradigm. The paper offers a model of structure forming processes in the frame of Systems theory, by combining information and energy flow. The city-umland-system serves as an example. The central business district as an information receiving and converting section contrasts with the outer sections of the city and the umland in which energy is received and transformed to products. Demand contrasts with supply. For a formalizing of the information and energy flow the polarity between superposed and subordinated environment has to be separated from the polarity between Start and end of the processes. The forming of the city-umland patterns may be regarded as a result of the interaction between these structure forming processes and the individual human beings which have to decide themselves which specific parts they play in the system.
