Current models of working memory (WM) stated that a unique part system — the visuo-spatial sketchpad (VSSP) — processes non-verbal content. Due to behavioral and neurophysiological findings, the VSSP was later subdivided into visual object and visual spatial processing, with the former representing an object';s appearance and the latter spatial information. This distinction is well supported. However, a challenge to this model is how spatial information from non-visual sensory modalities, for example, the auditory modality, is processed. The present publication directly compares visual and auditory spatial WM in several behavioral experiments and event-related potentials studies. Based on the outcomes, the role of modality in spatial working memory is reconsidered. |
