At present, there still exists a considerable information deficit in the field of urban soils. The Federal Soil Protection Law (1998) demands the conservation of natural soil functions, and the State Water Protection Law of the Saarland (1998) requests the infiltration of precipitation water running off from sealed surfaces. In order to comply with the existing legal orders sufficiently, detailed information about the soils of densely populated urban and industrial areas is mandatory. In the thesis on hand, basic data on the urban soils in the greater Saarbrücken area were acquired and evaluated. Furthermore a method for the efficient examination of urban soils with the help of a conceptual soil map (KBK) is presented. Special focus of the thesis is the investigation of spatial distribution patterns based on soil genesis and soil properties. The KBK was developed with the help of geographical information systems and contains information about the actual land use, land use history, geology and slope inclination. At selected sites in Alt-Saarbrücken, 30 soil profiles were described and soil samples taken from the single horizons were analyzed in the laboratory for common soil parameters. With the help of the KBK and various cluster analyses the gained results are assigned to spatial data for visual display. The investigations demonstrate that urban soils are in parts considerably different from soils of natural formation. In the conurbation of Saarbrücken the dominant soil formation processes can be classified as follows: soils dominated by natural development, soils dominated by anthropogenic pedogenesis, soils dominated by anthropogenic lithogenesis and soils dominated by anthropogenic pedogenesis and lithogenesis. Due to the heterogeneity of the soils, the chemical soil properties differ much between the soil profiles analysed. |
