A novel catalyst system which is able to lower the oxidation temperature of soot to carbon dioxide could be discovered and optimized by means of high-throughput methods. The ternary oxide system Bi-Ce-K-O exhibited depending on the composition and the measurement conditions high catalytic activity. These combustion temperatures are significantly lower than that of thermal combustion, which are above 600 °C. The main component of this system is the fluorite type solid solution Ce1-xBixO2-(x/2). Potassium is incorporated into the fluorite lattice, serving as a promoter. In addition to the catalytic activity this system showed high thermal stability and resistance to poisoning gases. Unlike the state-of-the-art materials, an activity could be measured even after hydrothermal aging. The alternative synthesis methods using a combination of precipitation and impregnation showed high potential for a possible large-scale production of the active material. |
