Titania and silica nanoparticles were produced via sol-gel route. Hydrophilic, hydrophobic and α-halogene ester terminated organic coupling agents with a phosphonic acid or silane moiety were synthesized. The nanoparticles were functionalized with the respective coupling agent either isotropically in suspension or anisotropically in Pickering emulsions. The visual evidence of anisotropic funktionalization was achieved via TEM after a grafting-from polymerization of PMMA. The amphiphilically modified particles were tested regarding their self-assembling. It has been shown that they have similar properties as surfactants: They stabilize emulsions and form vesicles and micelles. The critical micelle concentration was determined. On hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces they assemble according their polarity. In a second part of the work, the photocatalytic degradation of the coupling agents on the titania surface was characterized. The kinetic of the decomposition was determined. The rate constant depends strongly from the structure of the coupling agent. The photocatalytic activity of the titania nanoparticles was used to break emulsions stabilized by amphiphilically modified particles. |
