The aim of this thesis was the investigation of capabilities and limits of local deposits by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) in aqueous suspensions. To obtain a local deposition the electric field has to be strongly focused on a small spot. An electrode configuration with a steady plate-electrode and a moveable point-electrode was developed in order to achieve a highly focused electric field. Due to the small diameter of the pointelectrode and its proximity to the plate-electrode it is possible to obtain local deposits with improved resolution. The limiting factor is the formation of bubbles caused by water electrolysis as these bubbles disturb the electric field. Therefore, it is extremely important to avoid the formation of bubble during the deposition process. Various chemical additives were tested with the aim of suppressing the formation of bubbles, but none of them was working reliably. Therefore, the bubbles were suppressed by using unbalanced asymmetric voltage pulses. In this way, it was possible to obtain deposits with dimensions the same as or smaller than that of the electrode diameter (200 - 100 μm). These deposits present steep edges and are relatively flat on top so that their shapes are similar to that of a cylinder. The deposition rate is in the range of 0.2 mg/cm-2s-1. The small distance between the electrodes causes high local electrical fields which results in a high electroosmotic fluid flow which influences the shape of the deposits significantly.
