Owing to their microstructure within the nm-range nanocrystalline materials exhibit properties which to a great extent are governed by their fraction of grain-boundary phases. For a long time the experimental results obtained on nanocrystalline materials were convoluted with properties such as porosity. As a consequence, the characterization of nanocrystalline materials has been to some extent limited to computer simulation. With the development of new processing techniques such as the pulsed electrolytic deposition almost porosity-free samples can be produced. A drawback of this method is still the occurrence of a pronounced texture and macro-strain in the samples. Nevertheless, due to the pore-free material with a mass density near the theoretical mass density, measuring the intrinsic properties of nanocrystalline materials has become possible. The Atomic Force Acoustic Microscopy is an appropriate technique to investigate the elasticity and the elastic-plastic transition of nanocrystalline metals. This method combines the high resolution of AFM and the sensitivity of ultrasound to elastic and anelastic properties. In this work a new contact mechanical model has been developed to obtain the elastic modulus from AFAM measurements. This model was applied to characterize the elasticity of nanocrystalline Ni-P samples with different grain sizes. The elastic-plastic transition in the same nanocrystalline Ni-P samples and in ultra-fine grained gold was observed by measuring the Q-value of the cantilever oscillations as a function of static load. The elastic-plastic transition is described as the heterogeneous nucleation of partial dislocation loops in the contact zone between tip and sample surface. |
