A high-throughput workflow for the screening of potential photocatalysts was developed and found its application in the discovery and optimization of new photocatalysts for the production of hydrogen, using a combinatorial search strategy. Starting from a diverse library of binary oxides, the ternary oxide Al40Bi40Pb20 was discovered a new lead composition by applying a doping and composition spread strategy. The photocatalytic activity of this hit was further increased by doping. The surface topography of catalytically active coatings was modified systematically by micrometer-scale periodical patterns using laser interference structuring. The positive influence of these structures on catalytic activity in heterogeneously catalysed gas-phase reactions was confirmed by emissivity-corrected infrared thermography. White-light interferometry and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the increase in catalytic activity was due to an increase in geometric surface by the periodical structures in the micrometer scale and by the creation of a coarse, porous surface in the submicrometer scale. |
